Course Title: Child Abuse and Neglect: Implications for Children and Youth

Summary: This interactive training will focus on topics such as: incidence and prevalence of child maltreatment in DC, identification of physical abuse in young children, recognizing cases of child neglect, and understanding the needs of the sexually abused child. In addition participants will engage in discussions about Mandatory Reporting Responsibilities, Systemís Interventions, Investigation, and Prosecution. A case scenario will provide an opportunity for participants to gain insight about complex situations and decision making.

Content Level: Basic/Intermediate/Advance

Length of Training: 4-hours

Course Title: Child Abuse and Neglect: Risk Factors in Children with Special Needs

Summary: This training focuses on children with disabilities and the identification and treatment of child maltreatment in this population. Studies have shown that children with disabilities are almost four times as likely to be victims of child maltreatment as compared to children without disabilities. Research documents the strong association between abuse and children with learning disabilities.

Course Title: Discipline and Behavior Management: Implications for Child Care Providers

Summary: This training is designed to increase awareness about trauma associated with physical punishment, and to increase knowledge and skills of child care providers to communication with parents. The goal of the workshop is to help providers to identify positive strategies for behavioral management, and how to communicate effectively with parents and children.

Course Title: Illness Prevention: A Public Health Approach for Child Care Providers

Summary: The goal of this training is to inform child care providers about strategies for prevention of real or potential health threats. Participants will be informed about the public health model to enhance knowledge about reducing risk factors and promoting healthy behaviors in order to prevent illness among children and staff of the facility. Sessions focus on understanding health terminology, recognizing symptoms of illness that require exclusion from the facility, and common medical problems that require removing the child from the setting.

Course Title: Health and Nutrition: Implications for Early Childhood Educators

Summary: Childhood obesity is a public health problem, and this workshop will on the implications of appropriate food portions, healthy snacks, and meal planning to promote healthy growth and development. Session discussions will include understanding how to read food labels, food allergies, the importance of vitamins, and how the body changes food to fuel for energy. Small group discussions will provide an opportunity to identify the links between eating and emotion.

Course Title: Medication Administration and Childrenís Health Records

Summary: This training for childcare providers will include an overview of basic procedures to administer medications safely to children in out-of-home settings, and there will be discussions on how to maintain child health records. This workshop approach is consistent with the standards National Association of Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the District of Columbia Child Care Regulations. Topics will focus on safety for handling of prescription medication, such as antibiotics, ear drops, eye drops, and skin preparations. Training will be provided by an experienced District of Columbia licensed health professional that will provide guidance on medication management in child care facilities.

Course Title: Food Handling and Sanitation in Child Care Facilities

Summary: This course will be conducted in two 4-hour sessions.

Part I will include discussion on food safety, illness prevention and hygienic practices of persons that handle food. Specific topics will include: sanitation, protection of foods from cross contamination, cleaning of equipment and utensils, and compliance with food laws as specified in the District of Columbia Food Code, Title 25 of the DC Municipal Regulations and the DC Child Development Facility Regulations.
Part II will be a continuation and will include information on: food borne illnesses such as those caused by infections related to bacteria, viruses, parasites, mold and yeast. Discussion will continue about potentially hazardous foods due to moisture content, nutrient content, and PH as a vehicle or host for micro-organisms. Participants will learn about the importance of time-temperature control, how to maintain proper storage of common perishable foods and safe temperatures for cooking of foods. Factors related to proper disposal and storage of garbage will also be included. This course will be taught by an experienced DC licensed public health professional.

Course Title: Keeping Kids Safe: Building a Curriculum for Pre-School Children about Safety.

Summary: This training session is an introductory course to provide teachers with the basic elements for developing a violence prevention curriculum to be used with pre-school children. A key strategy is to use interactive techniques to promote active learning about safety of children. A well-designed curriculum and the selection of skilled child focused trainers are the two most critical factors in creating an effective training program to meet the needs of young children. Content of this workshop will be on planning the design process, how to conduct a needs assessment, development of the goals and objectives for each module, researching the topic, and development of age appropriate materials on violence prevention.
